RamSan-720

The RamSan-720 is the first high availability SLC Flash system from Texas Memory Systems. This SSD has no single point of failure, and features:6 or 12 TB of usable storage (5 or 10 TB high availability storage with system-level RAID) 2D Flash RAID™ utilizing RAID 5 within Flash Modules and RAID 5 across Flash Modules, Redundancy for power, data, and management, 25-100 microseconds latency, 1U form factor, Two dual-port 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel controllers or dual-port 40 Gb/s QDR InfiniBand controllers, Proprietary Series-7 Flash Controller™ featuring patented reliability features.

The RamSan-720 is perfect for running multitenant heterogeneous applications that lack built-in high availability features, like:

  • Virtualization and virtual desktop
    infrastructure (VDI) environments
  • Cloud platforms
  • Databases

High Availability
The RamSan-720 has the reliability features required
in true enterprise storage, including:

  • No single point of failure
  • Four layers of data correction
  • ◦ Chip-level: Error Correcting Code (ECC)
    ◦ Module-level: RAID 5 across Flash Chips
    ◦ Module-level: Variable Stripe RAID™ (VSR™)
    ◦ System-level: RAID 5 across Flash Modules
  • 2D Flash RAID™
  • Fully redundant components
  • Hot swappable Flash Modules
  • Low power (typically 300-400 watts)

Architecture
The RamSan-720 continues the TMS tradition of producing high bandwidth, low latency systems with important logic implemented in hardware. This SSD is built with 12 Flash Modules powered by the Texas Memory Systems Series-7 Flash Controller™. The modules are connected through redundant high-speed internal data switches, redundant RAID controllers, two redundant dual-port Fibre Channel or InfiniBand interfaces, and redundant management controllers offering Ethernet interfaces.

RAID Data Protection
All RamSan SSDs protect your data with three levels of correction: ECC, Variable Stripe RAID™, and module-level RAID 5. The RamSan-720 ups the ante with a fourth level of data correction: system-level RAID 5. 2D Flash RAID™ combines the protection of module-level and system-level RAID 5. Texas Memory Systems is the only SSD vendor that protects your data both within and across Flash Modules.

Low Power Usage
Unlike competing products, RamSan SSDs use custom-designed hardware, not repurposed server parts that rely on software to do the heavy lifting. By using purpose-built hardware, the RamSan-720 delivers efficient high performance. The RamSan-720 uses about 75% less power than competitors while retaining RamSan levels of performance. TMS achieves this dramatic reduction in power usage by incorporating several techniques. For example, the RamSan-720 was designed from the ground up to use fewer components, data buses, and power-hungry CPUs. By incorporating only a few fast buses in hardware FPGAs and including small amounts of DDR memory, the RamSan-720 avoids the excessive power use and heat generation (which lead to high cooling costs and premature Flash failure) of competing systems.

Series-7 Flash Controller™
Exclusively available from Texas Memory Systems, the Series-7 Flash Controller™ is the seventh generation of RamSan Flash controllers. Its main features over other architectures include:
Better performance. The highly parallel architecture of the Series-7 Flash Controller takes full advantage of the performance of each Flash chip by minimizing individual FPGA load. This parallel architecture is a core component of the RamSan design and is why the RamSan is the uncontested performance leader.
More reliability features. Patented Variable Stripe RAID™ (VSR™) technology, available exclusively in new Texas Memory Systems products, efficiently bypasses failed Flash planes and chips. Enhanced error correcting code (ECC) techniques help mitigate block failures.
Improved latency for small requests. The Series-7 Flash Controller has new optimizations for small (512-byte) requests that significantly decrease latency.
